Two historic, and cultural trademarks of wine have been the glass bottle in which it rests and the cork that keeps it safe. Not so much in the U.S. as of yet, but more so in other countries, the use of cork has diminished. This is due to shortage and supposed "tainting" of the wine. The replacement has been boxes or bottles with screw caps. Now I don't know about you, but when the time comes, I don't know that I'll be able to cope with drinking wine out of a box.
Bottles with screw caps aren't quite as much of a wine culture-shock, but the use of cork adds a certain character that can't be replaced. Nonetheless, this most likely will become the reality. But what I do find interesting is that in New Zealand it looks as though cork may be making a comeback - or maybe it's more of a hope than a reality. In any event, "Cork May Pop Back in Bottle," an article written by Stephen Ward highlights the reemergence of cork. This write-up today is more of a interesting tidbit than anything else, but always, I'd love for you to share thoughts - How does the idea of screw caps effect you?
